CORRECTED POSTING: 3/9 S.O. Forum on Women in the Palestinian Struggle – International Women’s Day

Saturday, March 9 – 3:30 to 5:30 pm Pacific – 6:30 to 8:30 pm Eastern (Zoom-Registration below)

Panelists listed below

Comrades and friends,

Outrage, Anger, Action — we have not been nor will we be silent. We have been mobilizing on our campuses, in our unions, on our city streets, at ship docks, and in the halls of government. We organize in person and in the digital sphere. We shall not relent until the Israeli genocide against the Palestinian people is tragic history, until Palestine is free from the river to the sea, and rights are no longer determined by religious or ethnic criteria.

This International Women’s Day let us gather to honor women in the longstanding Palestinian Struggle for Self-Determination. Join us for a discussion of women in struggle including reflections on the film “Naila and the Uprising”  led by a panel of women steeped in and engaged in popular struggles in the United States and internationally.

The film “Naila and the Uprising” (which should be viewed beforehand) chronicles the political development of Naila Ayesh, a member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) and the evolution of the first Intifada, focusing particularly on the essential role of women and the development of the Unified National Leadership of the Uprising (UNLU) (al-Qiyada al Muwhhada).

We can’t be free as women unless we’re in a free country. And even if we are free of the occupation, we can’t know freedom as long as we are subjugated in our own society. – Sama Aweidah, included in Naila and the Uprising

Our panel includes:

Myriam Faraj, an organizer with the One Democratic State Initiative who lived in the West Bank during the first Intifada

Liliana Plumeda, a member of CORCI, Mexicali, Mexico, who has been organizing solidarity actions for Gaza

Shafeah M’Balia, a leader of Black Workers for Justice in North Carolina

Farida Boutattoura, who will speak about women in the Algerian revolution and Hirak

Desirèe Rojas, president of the Sacramento chapter of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement – AFL-CIO who has been involved in farmworker organizing and immigrant rights since the seminal Grape boycott in which her parents were leading organizers

A Palestinian woman involved in organizing the current demonstrations and actions

Our moderator:

Mya Shone, editorial member, The Organizer Newspaper. Mya was coordinator of the End All Aid to Apartheid Israel – For a Democratic Secular Palestine appeal and campaign launched at the time of the first Intifada and co-authored Prisoners of Israel with Ralph Schoenman.
