Women in the Palestinian Struggle – International Women’s Day – A Socialist Organizer Forum

Saturday, March 9 – 3:30 to 5:30 pm Pacific – 6:30 to 8:30 pm Eastern (Zoom-Registration below)

Comrades and friends,

The dire situation for the Palestinians in Gaza and in the West Bank has intensified over the last few days. Netanyahu escalated the attack on Rafah with a series of bombing strikes this past Sunday while over 123 million people in the United States and millions other worldwide were distracted watching the Super Bowl. Amnesty International issued a report Monday in which it concluded that Israeli forces are killing Palestinians in the West Bank with “near total impunity.

The Palestinian people remain resolute, resilient, steadfast (Sumud) while activists around the world step up the campaign against the Israeli genocide with demands to Stop the Bombardment and End the Siege. Minneapolis became the 60th City or Municipality to pass a “Ceasefire” resolution, the strongest yet as it calls explicitly for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel.

Adalah Justice Project post

The essential demand to End All Aid is spreading across the country. I’ve included the latest poster from Adalah Justice Project (“Stop Arming Israel”). There is no time to lose. The U.S. Senate, spearheaded by the Democratic Party, passed a $95.3 billion foreign aid bill including over $14 million in supplemental military aid to Israel.

We’re asking you to take a moment from the ongoing demonstrations and their planning, to join us Saturday afternoon, March 9, to honor Women in the Palestinian Struggle, including those of us in the international solidarity movement, as we celebrate International Women’s Day.

On March 8, 1908, women workers in the needle trades (garment industry) marched through New York City’s Lower East Side to protest child labor, sweatshop conditions, and to demand women’s suffrage. On March 8, 1917, Russian women in St. Petersburg began a strike for “Bread, Peace, and Freedom” in response to the death of 2 million Russian soldiers in World War I. Their protest sparked the Russian Revolution.
What better way to pay tribute to our valiant struggle than to discuss the extraordinary role of women during the first Intifada (1987-1993) and what this means for shaping the struggle now and into the future.

Women in the Palestinian Struggle – International Women’s Day – A Socialist Organizer Forum

Saturday, March 9, 3:30 to 5:30 pm Pacific • 6:30 to 8:30 pm Eastern (Zoom-Registration below)

Join us for a discussion of the remarkable film “Naila and the Uprising” (first Intifada) and women involved in the Palestinian struggle, including in the international solidarity movement.

View the film ahead of time – either at 2:00 pm before the discussion or earlier at your convenience. It is available free on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5NX1K7wc6k (use the YouTube gear to retain the English subtitles while eliminating the Portuguese subtitles)

Naila Ayesh is a leader in the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) one of the member organizations of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The film describes her life as a militant and the evolution of the first Intifada, focusing particularly on the role of women and the development of the Unified National Leadership of the Uprising (UNLU) (al-Qiyada al Muwhhada)

We can’t be free as women unless we’re in a free country. And even if we are free of the occupation, we can’t know freedom as long as we are subjugated in our own society.” – Sama Aweidah, included in Naila and the Uprising
